American Sustainable Rubber Company, LLC (“ASR”), a wholly owned subsidiary of United American Healthcare Corporation (UAHC), is reinventing rubber. Simple as it sounds, ASR’s technology brims with the potential to reduce America’s reliance on imported rubber using an unlikely source: dandelions. Propelling ASR’s alternative rubber program is Dr. Katrina Cornish, an award-winning and globally recognized expert with more than 30 years of experience working in rubber biosynthesis and alternative feedstocks.
Rubber is classified by the U.S. government as a “Strategic Material” critical to national security. Yet, the United States imports its natural rubber supply ($1.6 billion in 2017) primarily from Southeast Asia, exposing it to significant geopolitical and environmental risk should this rubber-producing region of the world cease production or exports due to natural disasters or unforeseen events.
As an indoor agriculture technology company cognizant of this issue, ASR, through an exclusive license agreement with The Ohio State University, has discovered a way to genetically modify the T.K. dandelion to improve its integrity and makeup for commercial rubber production. Earlier this year, ASR named Dr. Cornish as scientific advisor to help advance this incredible natural rubber alternative at a sustainable and commercial level.
Dr. Cornish’s accolades and experience are befitting for a mission of this degree.
“Having her as an advisor to our team is a nod to our strategic plan to bring a natural rubber supply to the United States. We believe that her years of experience working in the rubber and plant science industries, paired with her research capabilities, will enable us to achieve our mission and change natural rubber production as we know it,” ASR President Timothy Madden stated in the press release announcing Dr. Cornish as scientific advisor.
After receiving a first-class honors degree in biological sciences and a Ph.D. in plant biology from the University of Birmingham in England, Dr. Cornish spent more than three decades involved in rubber biosynthesis and alternative feed stocks in the government, university, and commercial sectors. Notably, Dr. Cornish is also the first researcher to demonstrate that it is possible to source natural rubber from hydroponic plants, which includes genetically-modified plants.
Dr. Cornish currently leads a program on bio-based fillers, alternative rubber production, and the exploitation of opportunity feed stocks from food processing and agriculture wastes for value-added biofuels and products.
In April 2019, Dr. Cornish was named the 2018 Innovator of the Year at the Research and Innovation Showcase at The Ohio State University, further validating the value of her expertise in helping ASR domesticate natural rubber production. The Innovator of the Year award recognizes University researchers who are actively working to promote the commercialization of University intellectual property through filed invention disclosures, patents applied for and/or received, technologies licensed, and offshoot companies formed.
Dr. Cornish is the original researcher who demonstrated that natural rubber could be sourced from hydroponic plants, including genetically-modified plants, which ASR plans to leverage to meet its goal of producing natural rubber on a commercially-viable scale.
